Abstract

In March 1999, the Museo Etnologico de Navarra "Julio Caro Baroja" accepted the donation of an important collection of musical items for mechanical players. The sample was supplied by the Community of Jesuit Fathers from the San Ignacio School in Pamplona, who owned the collection since about 1962, thanks to a legacy. The first owner of this 582 piano player rolls and 80 gramophone records was Gregorio Iribas Yeregui, who bought this rolls between 1914-1921 and his records in the period 1915-1935. The collection represents the musical taste of the middle-class in the last years of the 19th century. Unquestionably, the favorites were dance music, as well traditional as international, opera from the Italian repertory, the Spanish operetta called "zarzuela" and the "cuplé", a genre of light lyric. The article looks through the history of piano players, that were invented around 1905 in the version for 88 piano notes. By the same date, the gramophone and the record were already major instruments for the very first spreading of popular music.
